Kids Program
Under the
Leadership and Management of Mary Rider, the BOLD Kids program is off and flying
and gaining momentum to get new blind and visually impaired children into the
program. Check
out this story of one recent successful event. http://www.gmtoday.com/news/local_stories/2008/Sept_08/09152008_04.asp
A message from our PR and VIP Liaison Director – Marty Hutchings
BOLD Kids Program
Hello fellow VIPs. In case you hadn’t noticed, there have been
more and more young people participating with us older folk in the fun. This is due in
large part to our new friend Peggy Rider, who started skiing with us 2 years ago
up at Sunburst when she was 8, and her wonderful mom, Mary. In the two years
that they have been with us, the word has been spreading. Now there are about
a dozen kids starting as young as 5 who enjoy some of our events like skiing and
swimming at the Rec Plex. Although VIP children are welcome at most of
regular BOLD events, the board has decided to recognize the increasing number of
young people joining the program by providing some additional activities geared
more toward younger kids thus, the BOLD Kids program is launched.
This past April, Mary Rider has taken on the roll of chair of the
BOLD Kids program and she has started their own newsletter. They have already
held 2 events of there own which have received some very favorable press
coverage.
There are many more fun events just for VIP kids and their families in
the works for the future.
I for one am very glad to see this happening. It is great to see
a program like BOLD step up and fill a very important need for fun and leisure
activities for blind children. It is great for the kids in many ways. Besides the
obvious, providing something for them to do, they get the chance to interact
with blind adults who are fully functioning members of society. For kids who wonder
what the future has in store for them, this can provide opportunities for
friendships to develop or even mentoring relationships.
So the next time you are on a BOLD outing, be on the listen out for
those little voices and take the opportunity to say “Hi.” If we can help BOLD
to become as meaningful to these young people as it is to us, they will step up
and take this great program to new heights for future generations.
Cross-Country Skiing News from Gary and Sherry Dahms
I hope
everyone is ready for some Cross-Country Skiing. We sure are! Last year with record snow falls it was
almost too much.
There were too many driveways and sidewalks to clear that prevented us
from enjoying it to the fullest. Let's all hope this year will be different,
enough snow to enjoy, but not so much to bog us down. We’ve been in contact with
Richard Wolter and he provided some dates that are available for Cross Country
Skiing.
Saturdays,Dec 20th, (seems early, but Richard has high hopes, and I trust
him)
Jan 10th and Jan 17th, Feb 14th and Feb
21st.
We have a list of
about 12 VIP's who enjoy Cross Country Skiing. Unfortunately I have very few guides. We all know that 2
or 3 guides for 10 or 12 VIP's does not work. We have skied at
